Relationship Corner: A Love Letter to Those Who Care for Others

Dear Caregiver,
How are you today? In a moment of stillness and self-reflection, how are you feeling really? You are an amazing person, who gives so selflessly and sacrificially. So many times I wonder how you manage to keep going! Perhaps you “caregive” out of obligation or duty, environmental expectations, learned behaviors, or personality and gifting.

This love letter goes out to those who care for children or family members in need, are caught in the “sandwich” between caring for their children while caring for aging parents, or those who care for the elderly in their community/church or as a volunteer or paid caregiver- in addition to keeping up with work, family, and life.
Are you at peace and content with the decisions you are making? Sometimes the hard road is the best (or only) option in the long run- it’s a personal choice. Or perhaps you know that you are burning both ends of the candle and riding fast on the crazy train. And that’s not a good thing. Dear caregiver, instead of worrying or dwelling in negative thoughts, can you put into words what the specific problem situation is? How do you feel about what happened/is happening and why does it matter so much to you? What are some possible solutions? And what are the possible outcomes (good and bad) if things stay status quo? Sometimes writing down your thoughts can help to organize them. If you decide to communicate your thoughts and needs, you may have to anticipate repeating your requests as change is hard for everyone.

To find your center again, would it be helpful to identify nurturing people in your life? Seek them out, thank them, embrace them, and consider ways to use their support better. Are there other relationship contacts you can integrate more into your life to help with balance and recharging? How I hope for your healing and the opportunity for you to have comfort, peace, and personal growth this year. Thank you for giving of yourself to others, for the tireless unseen sacrifices, and your commitment to love and “being there.”

<3Be well !
