In the United States, more than one in three people reported suffering from Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis along with clinical depression (American Gastrological Assn, 2023). In a different study, over 27% of patients with IBS also reported suffering from depression (University of Missouri School of Medicine, 2026). More than half of persons reporting chronic pain also have co-occurring depression symptoms (American Psychological Assn, 2023). The individual risk for depression is generally greater if you or a first degree relative have a history of depression; are experiencing major life changes, trauma, or stress; or have serious medical illnesses or conditions that require significant lifestyle changes. ​

The symptoms of depression include:
  • Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness
  • Negative self-talk

  • Changes in appetite or weight
