Psychotherapy for pain is one treatment area that is part of a multidisciplinary approach, especially for complex pain conditions. 
Treatment focuses on managing the sympathetic nervous system response, thereby lowering the perception of pain. Just as with medical interventions, psychotherapy for pain addresses learning new behaviors that decrease pain and prevent flare-ups. Additionally treatment addresses related depression/anxiety symptoms and supports restoration of identity and functioning in daily roles. This personalized approach considers multiple factors in the context of the pain you feel. Furthermore, the objective approach of treatment prevents having to depend on family/friends to be pseudo-therapists and can provide new insight for pain management.

While there are no instant treatments/cures for chronic conditions such as pain, there are things to learn to better manage your pain. In fact, pain psychologist Beth Darnall at Stanford created an evidence-based protocol to treat pain in a single 2 hour session. Her treatment format isn't to minimize the challenges of chronic pain but rather to make effective treatment convenient and accessible to as many pain sufferers as possible. Typically therapy for pain management will take a few sessions. 

In my treatment approach, I review pain management fundamentals and identify personal factors that trigger or worsen pain episodes. The pace and length of treatment depends upon your needs and expectations. The logistics of fitting of psychotherapy into your schedule and responsibilities are also considered.
