What is health psychology about?
Do you worry about your health getting worse? Is it hard for you to make the changes your doctor wants you to make? Do you feel anxious or depressed because of your health?
What if you could work with an expert who could guide you to make changes to improve your physical and psychological health? What if you could find a way to worry less and have a better quality of life?
There is stigma that comes with seeking mental health care. However asking for help doesn’t mean you are crazy, weak, or “super bad.” Therapy is useful for treating mild psychological symptoms, stress management, and treatment of chronic depression and anxiety that are made worse because of health-related issues.

There are 2 major concepts that illustrate how therapy can be a game changer when we look at whole-person health.
1) the biopsychosocial model (Engel, 1980) for medicine states that your
overall health is influenced by what is happening to you physically as well as what is going on with your emotions, thoughts, and environment.

- stress and guilt because of your health condition?
- difficulties managing time and energy limitations (i.e. “activity pacing”)?
- anger about your health and its impact upon your life?
- burn out from lifestyle changes to care for your health?
2) the mind-body connection, the communication that constantly occurs
between your mind (thoughts, emotions, beliefs, attitudes) and your
body, influences one another.
For example, when you are under stress, you might have a headache or increased pain levels. Research has also shown that patterns of negative emotions (anger, sadness, anxiety, fear) can contribute to increased heart disease risks.

Therapy can also be episodic in that you focus on one health-related issue and then therapy is done. As another health issue arises, you can re-enter therapy.
